Happy Friday. Today I’m sharing Amazon Fresh Q1 performance and my thoughts on where you need to focus. The summary is Amazon Fresh with limited distribution sold over $10 million in Q1. Produce and Dairy were the leading categories. Bottom line is Amazon knows how to drive growth using data science that allows them to better serve their customers, prospects, and to optimize product offering.
So what does it mean for you as an independent grocer?
The first takeaway is that people are buying produce and dairy for delivery and pickup. That’s great news as it shows the US market is rapidly adopting online as a medium for all food purchase.
The second and most important takeaway is how can you be different for your customers? You should be asking, what does Amazon not do that I can do for my customers? This is where you have to think about your prospective market. Are you segmenting your audience by life stage, affluence, life style, eating habits, etc… Are you providing unique marketing programs that meet the need of customers within those specific segments? Are you creating an optimized product set to match what your customers want?
The answer to those questions should be yes. If it’s not, you have work to do. The good news is that doing the work has benefits for you: more loyal customers, more new customers, and ultimately better sales numbers and a stronger outlook moving forward.
